Tokyo Seminar

This years we sold out with over 100 people at  the event a week before I arrived in Japan.    Although I have done many of these events in the past,  its always nice to see the excited and motivated people filling the seats.  This year theme was getting the advantage through the Scott Perry Academy and the Katakana Box.  If you missed this event, no worries.  We will have it on DVD in a few weeks.

SP 英会話

After nearly 20 years, I am starting up my English Academy  School again.  When I was teaching before no one used the internet for classes.  There really was no internet.   I was one of the first people to teach using the internet around 2001 for pronunciation classes.  Now every school is teaching English online.  What will SP English Academy have this time?  


First, SP English Academy is "Private"  It is a private English conversation school. People can not sing up and Just start taking classes.  Only my pronunciation students, Workshop students, SPTV Students, Dreamtrain members or customers and friends or family of student that are already members may apply.  You must be focused on your pronunciation, and have reached a minimum pronunciation level before you can get in.  We want to make sure that the English you learn is able to be understood clearly.  If your English can not be understood you have wasted your time.


Second, It is "American English"  The same English used in Hollywood.  The same English I teach to Japanese movie starts and singer working in Hollywood.     I will employ Native American English teachers, who all expect to be paid more, but that is life, and we will not allow you to leave our school with a typical Japanese Accent.   


Third, SP English Academy will teach using methods most people have never used or tried to use to  learn or improve their English.  I have seen the English conversation business in Japan for 25+ years.  The only things that have changed are the names.  The general system, books used, length of time and results are still basically the same.  


Classes  will start next month.  They will be online in the beginning, and eventually in our offices.  Students can apply starting   March 25th.   The first physical location (building)  is planned for Spring 2013.   If you apply and are not accepted, there is prep school that you can attend to improve your pronunciation or general vocabulary.

How Lucky We Are

Leap Year just passed recently...It's now March 2012... There have been about 514 Leap Years since Caesar created it in 45BC. Without the extra day every 4 years, today would be July 28, 2013. Also, the Mayan calendar did not account for leap year…so technically the world should have ended several months ago. Lucky us..

よみタイムVol.176　2012年2月24日発行号 目からウロコの発音ブートキャンプ！ 日本語英語におさらばだ！ スコット先生に習うネイティブの発音 「英語の発音？ だめよ。アメリカに何（十）年も住んでるのに日本語なまりが抜けないんだもん。もういいの」なんて諦めている場合ではない。英語は、下手でも話せれば世界が広がるし、上手に話せれば人生変わるというもの。日本語を母国語とする日本人独特の「発音の壁」を打開すべく、スコット先生の４時間集中ワークショップを、本紙記者が突撃体験！ 舌と口の周りの筋肉が痙攣し、腹筋がつりそうになるまで頑張った！（ささききん） （写真：割ばしを使って口の開け方を練習。手鏡で自分の口の形を確認！ ）

２月のとある土曜の午後。会場は、ウォルドルフ・アストリアホテル上層階のゴージャスな一室。この優雅な空間で、スコット先生の「発音ブートキャンプ」とでもいうべき集中ワークショップが始まった。 「僕が25年をかけて編み出したメソッドを使えば、３、４カ月、難しいケースでも半年から９カ月でネイティブ並みの発音でしゃべれるようになりますよ」とスコット先生は自信満々に言い切る。 この日の参加者は、男性医師（リサーチャー）２人、女性起業家１人、女性政府関係者１人で、みんな在米２～７年。それに、在米25年という本紙の古狸レポーターというメンツだった。 「はい、じゃあまず配ったテキストの文章を一人ずつ読んでみて」と先生。「The Brown Family is at the beach.ﾉLinda is listening to music.」という４行ほどの英文。 読む間、口元をじーっと観察している先生から、「あなたは５、あなたは４」と、不可解な数字を言われるも、みんな「？？？」。これは、４行の英文を読む間の息継ぎの回数だった。 ネイティブの息継ぎ回数はせいぜい２回だという。英語が、日本語よりもずっと肺活量を要する言語であることを先生から説明され、皆「ヘェェ～」。 そこでビニール袋を使っての実験。息を大きく吸い込んで、しぼった袋の中に向かって、１月から12月までを英語で言うのだが、なかなか袋が膨らまないﾉ。要するに、みんな息を吐かずに英語をしゃべっているということだ。 追い討ちをかけるようにスコット先生が、「みぞおちに手を当てて、息を吐きながら『アー、アー、アー』とリズムを付けて言ってみて」「イスに座って両脚上げて腹筋しながらやってみて」。もうこうなると、ヨガの呼吸法の世界だ。みんな必死。 ほかにもこんなことをした。上下の前歯を合わせたまま同じ４行の英文を読む。先生は何事もないように読んでみせるが、生徒は誰一人できない！ 今度は「Ｏｎｅ・Ｔｗｏ・Ｔｈｒｅｅ」を言ってみなさいと先生が言う。それぞれが自己ベストを尽くすも、先生を満足させた者はいなかった。 ポイントはいろいろあって、例えば「Ｔｗｏ」を、日本人は口をすぼめて短く「トゥ」と言ってしまう。「そうじゃなくて、Ｔをまずちゃんと発音して」という先生の「Ｔｗｏ」を、活字でなんとか真似るなら「Ｔ（ティ）ゥー」という感じかﾉ。 この「Ｔ（ティ）ゥー」をみんなで何度練習したか。ここらあたりで、参加者の口の周りの筋肉がつり始める。 さらに、英語の発音には、日本語にはない「口の形」があり、それがいかに大事かも先生は力説していた。 「僕の日本人の友達が、うるさいカフェでカウンター越しにコーヒーを注文したら、クッキーが出てきちゃったんだ」と先生。確かに、相手の声が聞こえない状態で、日本語風に「コーヒー」と言ったら、英語の「クッキー」の口の形になるなあと、参加者らはそれぞれに「うんうん」とうなづくことしきり。 この４時間、アルファベットの発音から始まり、いかにこれまでいい加減に発音してきたかを全員が実感することになった。参加者からは、「英語の発音は、筋トレと似ていますね。フィジカルトレーニングなんだなあと実感しました」「発音をこんなふうに習ったことはなかった。目からウロコ」などの感想が聞かれた。 このワークショップの後は、45分の個人セッション２回が無料でついてくる。スカイプを使って指導してくれるそうだ。 本日の５人がネイティブスピーカーにになれるかなれないかは、これからの数カ月の努力にかかっている！スコット・ペリー先生 （Scott Perry） 日本人を対象にした英語発音矯正トレーナー。「スコット先生」の愛称で親しまれる。UCLA卒業後、ジェットプログラムで1991～95年日本在住、埼玉県の中学校で英語を教える。UCLA在学中の86年日本人留学生に英語発音を教え、埼玉県では生徒の英語スピーチコンテスト出場を指導、優勝に導いた。25年間、日本人独特の英語発音矯正エキスパートとして日米で活躍。現在出身地ペンシルベニア州ピッツバーグ在住。ニューヨーク市で定期的にワークショップを開くほか、年５回は日本で指導。日本人映画俳優のハリウッド進出の影にスコット先生あり。日本語も堪能。 「ネイティブ英語発音の秘訣」 2月25日（土）2:00pm-6:00pm 2月26日（日）12:00pm-4:00pm 会場 : The Waldorf Astoria Hotel 301 Park Ave. (bet. 49th & 50th Sts.) 詳細・申込み： www.scottperrygroup.com/workshop/ny.html 申し込みは各日程の前日まで受付 問合せ：english@scottperrygroup.com 英語での交流サークル「シャンペン・クラブ」を創設したばかり。第一回イベントを２月25日にウォルドルフ・アストリアで行う。詳細は問合せを。

The Dreamtrain is coming to New York this February 11th and 12th..   and again on February 25 and 26th  The first event will be a workshop in my hotel room.   The Grand Suite.  It is a 2000 Square foot (175m/sq)  hotel room that has multiple rooms and a separate private dining room that seats 10 people.   We will study for English pronunciation for 4 hours followed by a small 
hotel cocktail party in the room.  Participants can invite friends to the party and enjoy the evening.

English Boot Camp

I am finally set on the dates and most details for the first "English Boot Camp" this fall in October.  About 20 of us will go to the mountains of Japan to study intensive English. We will study everything from pronunciation, listening, grammar, reading, writing skills, TOEIC, watch English movies, debate, business conversation etc.  We will have workshops, and discussion groups.  Four other teachers will help me teach and we will divide the students and teachers into 4 teams.  The red blue yellow and green teams and play games challenge each other and learn from our mistakes. There will be TV monitors around our area with English TV and music playing.   People will not be aloud to speak in Japanese.. If students are caught speaking Japanese they will lose a ticket.  All fun and games...  Losing tickets hurts your team.. I can not give all the details of the event now but there are many more challenging and fun things planned.  After Boot Camp there is a 4 month follow up with your team and your teachers and myself.  The students will likely dream in English by the 3rd day.   If all goes super as planned I hope to make it an annual event.    Details will be posted in my main site at www.scottperry.jp The planning has already begun and will continue up until start day in October.  It will be a be life changing.... The Dreamtrain stops at the Boot Camp this fall... Get on board....

2012年秋にスコット先生主催の"イングリッシュ・ブートキャンプ”を開催します。日本の山岳で開催するキャンプは発音はもちろんのこと、リスニング、文法、リーディング、ライティング、TOEIC対策などをはじめとした英語全般をしっかり集中的に学習し、洋画鑑賞や、ディベート、ビジネス英会話なども取り入れたキャンプを企画しています。3日間のキャンプにはスコット先生の他、4名のネイティブ講師の方もいらっしゃいます。グループ/チームを組んでのゲームや対抗戦などで楽しみながら英語を学べる時間もたくさん予定しております。キャンプの後は4ヶ月に渡るフォローアップサポートもご用意しておりますので、グループ/チームの他の生徒さんや、講師の先生、そしてスコット先生とキャンプ後もしっかり復習・応用が学べます。

Hawaii in the Winter

Just arrived in Hawaii from long trip to Japan.  If you have ever been here you know how relaxing it is.  Everyone is very laid back and the weather is between 79 and 82 everyday.  When I left Tokyo it was freezing cold. : ) I was happy to change into my shorts.  Everyone that sells something here speaks English and ... Japanese...  Even if you are Korean or Chinese people will speak "Japanese" to you if you look asian.  Very funny.  There are many Japanese speakers here also.  You hear Japanese everywhere.  


In a few days, I will have my first workshop in Hawaii for the Japanese speakers here that are concerned about their pronunciation. I hope to make it a regular stop on my pronunciation tour.  I will also try to broadcast a SPTV training video from here as well.
